It's more feasible to support something that still "exists (Mac's are still being made) than something that doesn't. (PS2's no longer in production)
PS2's are still being made.
http://bit.ly/zHFdCYCan also play it on a fat PS3, which I suspect most players are doing.
That's what I had been using when I played recently, and it worked great. My friend and I had just decided to give the game another try again last month since we had more time, but due to the mac situation, we ended up spending most of our time here instead. I guess the "dodged a bullet" analogy would be applicable.
I feel really terrible for their community, especially considering they are only getting a month to say their goodbyes. Like EQmac, they seem to have a really tight knit group of players, many of which have been playing since the games release (some even in beta). To make matters worse, their forum moderation has gotten ridiculous with the edits/deletions and won't let them say barely anything (including posts about petitions to save the servers and the like). Talk about rubbing salt in the wound.
After Smedley's surprising decision to save Al'kabor and his reassurance that one of the main reasons he did it was "because he really cares", you'd think he could give the EQOA community at least a little of the same sympathy and let them vent their frustration and woes without the mods pillaging all of their posts. I can understand needing to keep straight vulgarity, threats, and other such posts off the forum, but really, many of those that have been senselessly edited don't fall into those categories at all, not from my observations anyway.
Ahem, sorry for the rant, I'm just a tad upset at the disrespect they are exhibiting towards another very loyal customer base. You'd think they could have learned something by now about community relations and having compassion for all of their customer bases, small and large. Don't get me wrong, I truly appreciate the decision to keep Al'kabor going and you definitely have to give Smedley credit and respect for making it possible, but I still think deciding to close EQOA with only a months notice (with the only given reason being, "it’s best for our developers to move on to the next adventure", -- which is an insult considering a developer hasn't touched the game in many years) is borderline despicable.
Since I'm unable to post on their official forums, if any EQOA players are reading this, you have my deepest condolences. If you ever decide to give the original Everquest a try, and you want a similar communal environment to what you were used to on EQOA, you should really give some thought to coming over to Al'kabor. I think I speak for most of us when I say that you'd be very welcome here. It's not a true replacement of course, but I'd say it's at least a sound alternative.
Safe travels.
