Okay, I reluctantly upgraded my desktop to Lion last week. Virtue Desktop no longer runs. Sigh. So now I'm looking at Mission Control, Apple's replacement for Expose and Spaces. MC appears to require the mouse to switch desktops. Sigh.

Before I spend a lot of time on this, I'd like to hear from folks who are ghetto boxing on Lion. What are you doing to switch between instances? I really liked how VD worked -- I could assign hotkeys to use to switch and it worked fabulously.

I may end up writing a quick program that edits my eqclient.ini file to put the second instance back on monitor 2 and do what I used to do. Ug.

Reading is fundamental.

Oh, that's helpful. Thanks for linking it, Wiz.

I'm probably going to have to set EQ up on an Intel Mac myself when the PPC client - and thus my G5 - die at the end of the month. Nice to see that Lion's version of spaces includes a VD-like one-key switching option. Is switching instant, or is there an obnoxious transition animation, as with spaces?

You will notice 0 difference between this and Spaces. So...obnoxious.

Thanks, Wiz. I figured someone had it here somewhere.

I just use the default commands - CONTROL+LEFT ARRROW and CONTROL+RIGHT ARROW - to switch spaces. The animation is kind of annoying, but it's fairly quick. Maybe 0.5 seconds. You can make it a one button press to switch as well if you want. (I just tend to have my hand hovering over the ctrl/alt/cmmd keys anyway, so not a lot of movement for me)

Yeah, f you are using the option to move to next or previous desktop the animation is really annoying; however, if you assign keybindings to move straight to another desktop (like cntr+1, cntr+2, etc) it is nearly instantaneous and works much better for switching between multiple characters at once. I have even been able to PBAoE stun lock with Bijaz, while switching quickly to my druid and cleric to cast their PBAoE dmg spells. The transition! is more along the lines of .1 or .05 seconds rather then the .5 or so moving to next or previous desktops.

This is how I do it, and I can 4box with no problem, even with stunlocking a bunch of mobs. It's the best way to do it, imo.

I use those exact keys to switch spaces both at home and the office, and it's always been very efficient for me.

You can disable the sliding animation on 10.6.

Yes, but what about once you're on Lion?

For now, I've done what some of the other posters have said. I had previously used command-1 and command-2 to switch between VD desktops, so I just mapped those for Mission Control. I don't care for the animation, but at least it's fairly fast and it gives a pretty good visual indication that you have done something.

I've been reading every post in regards to this and i still get issues now and then when I two box. I launch firefox on desk 1, fire up the game, log in, switch to desk 2 hit safari, launch the game and most of the time it works. However sometimes when I launch from desk 2, it automatically switches to desk 1 and overlaps my first copy of EQ. So I was wondering what caused this.

Secondly, I clearly cannot 3box because the issue above happens to the 3box even if I use another browser like chrome. Even if the two copies are running on a separate desktop the third copy automatically overlaps.

Please let me know what is causing this. Thanks!

If you're on Lion, you can use MissionControl to move applications between desktops. If you're still on Leopard or Snow Leopard, I don't know what your options are except switching to VirtueDesktops -- I never had any problem with it.

What OS are you running?

You dont need a different browser to launch multiple instances. The same browser will work even if you are loading up 10 accounts.
