I know everyone is super happy we are being saved, but at the same time its going to make one of my computers an expensive paper weight. So I thought I would make a poll to see how many people this change will affect, and maybe if the numbers are high enough it would justify Hobart to put some time into it.

Incase people do not know what im talking about: starting around March 29th only intel macs will be able to run this game.

P.S. try to keep as little discussion out of this as possible.

The only thing to discuss is why you feel entitled to dictate to SOE that they should develop for unsupported platforms.

You made a thread called "the save power pc thread," which speaks for itself. It's the second such thread you've made in three days, while the other one still has active discussion. You added a poll that amounts to "who agrees with me".

I, and every other person on the server, has an active interest in the very limited development resources of the game being put towards supporting current technology, rather than ancient technology that even the hardware and OS manufacturer no longer recognizes.

For the very small minority that still plays this game on 7+ year old computers (yes, there are school children older than your computers), you're entitled to post your opinions, but spamming the boards in hopes of garnering the sympathy of the developer is at best presumptuous.

Aw, PPCs aren't so bad. I'd be a bit sad to see the PPC client go the way of the dodo. I loved my old G5 towers, they took a lickin' and kept on tickin'. It was hard to find a better bang for your EQ buck than a $200 machine that could run 4 or 5 instances of the old client, particularly when even the tip top Intel macs were choking on Rosetta after 3.

The new client really is beautiful, and it's absolutely worth upgrading your hardware for if you can afford it, but I sympathize with folks who are reluctant to drop Mac-calibre cash on a new machine just to play EQ.

I see you are a troll, but I will clarify a couple of things.

Yes a couple days ago I asked if powerpc was being shut down due to something that was posted by a non soe employee. I really only wanted clarification from Hobart or someone who could answer for him.

2nd the only way to know for sure that the number of people using older macs are in fact a small number is to run a poll, how an individual votes is up to them.

3rd it seems the point of this poll completely went over your head so dont think too hard about it. If it doesnt affect you vote no, if it does vote yes.

I thought it was fairly straight forward but apparently it was too much for you. Im just another player who would like to continue playing a game that I started back in 2006. Im not demanding anything to be done, but if enough people are not going to be able to play then maybe Hobart (not soe) would feel like helping us out.

I think I have said all that I need to about this thread. If you want to continue trolling me I will not respond. Have a nice day.

He who calls troll. :?

Of course it's in your interest that SOE spend a ton of money just so you don't have to spend a little. I get that.

But that doesn't mean they hold some sort of moral obligation to suit you, or that posting incessantly about it here will convince them to see the light.

When EverQuest was launched on PC, it required a Pentium II 400 Mhz and 256 Mb RAM. Do you think the current game would run on that machine? Do you think it should?

This isn't Duck Hunt for NES. It's an MMO, a constantly evolving system, and it's apt to change as technology does. You're ultimately doing nobody favors, least of all yourself, by insisting on playing on outdated hardware.

If anyone has a PC and wants to play EQ Mac, you might want to check out pg 79 of this thread here:

Man, I am so, so tempted to give this a try, but I'm afraid there might be account repercussions for using an unofficial method like this. You think Hobart would allow it?

It also appears that there are quite a few bugs (some fairly substantial) associated with this method, such as the bazaar traders not working, nor item linking. It would definitely be better than nothing though, as long as it was tolerated by SOE.

Oh man, the coolest thing about that is the classic UI being able to be used again. I so wish we were able to select and use that UI on our macs!!!!

I might regret admitting it, but I ended up giving into temptation to try this out and... it actually works!!! I couldn't believe it! It was such an incredible feeling being able to run around in the world I've only ever seen with a cheap, underpowered mac. It looks and runs a million time better on my current gaming laptop. Only problem is, the fps gets sooo high in the older areas that it messes with the mouse look functionality (the x axis gets much slower than the y, which makes mouse looking to the left and right much slower than vertically.) As soon as I got into PoK though, my fps got into the 100s and the mouse worked properly. I remember this same bug on the PC servers and the only way to fix it was to put a cap on the fps to about 60 or less. Unfortunately though, due to this classic UI being used in this patched version, the options menu doesn't have a lot of the stuff you guys get with the current default mac version, which includes the advanced graphics option that has the fps slider, as well as many of the newer UI windows. *Edit - just realised after getting the luclin UI to work, that the mac client doesn't have the advanced graphics options and/or a fps slider. Guess I was thinking of the PC version*

The older UI also only supports small resolutions, so to get fullscreen you have to lower your PCs native resolution, and it's made reading text in-game very difficult. Then again, I am playing it on my big screen, HDTV with an hdmi, so that might be the biggest factor in that problem hehe. I'll have to try it on a smaller monitor later and report how it goes.

All that said, I actually have an opposite sentiment to yours right now, as I really wish I could us the new default UI (the one that current mac users use). Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the look and feel of the Velious UI (being a minimalist) but I'd much rather have utility versus aesthetics when I have to choose. Now if they could update it to include the higher resolutions and all the functionality, I'd be all for it! In fact, it'd be my UI of choice, no questions asked.

I still really don't feel right using an unofficial method to play on the server (as I fear Hobart will be against it), but as of right now, it's the only way for players like myself to have the chance, especially with the much more affordable, PPC machines being all but phased out soon.

Here's hoping that Hobart considers releasing an official patch for PC users clamoring for the mac server. Help us make the dream a reality! :)

Edit: Woot! Just wanted to post a little update - it seems that you can get the current default Luclin UI by doing this, "To get the Luclin UI, edit eqclient.ini NewUI=TRUE instead of NewUI=FALSE". Also, the bugs that were mentioned seem to be fixed after doing this, even the bazaar traders! The text is completely clear and legible now too. Glad to see such a simple fix solving all these problems.

I really hope Hobart allows the use of this patch, despite being unofficial. As it stands now, it seems to be a completely functional, and most importantly, an affordable method for playing on this terrific server.

I hope that this opcode proxy doesn't start bringing with it PC-side issues that we haven't had to deal with on here. (Lookin at you MQ)...

Yeah I really hope they disable this or that the new patcher breaks it somehow as the last thing we need is a bunch of PC hackers ruining AK.

Not all of us PC users are hackers you know. Many of us just genuinely want to experience this amazing server, but can't really afford (or justify really) spending 5-6 hundred dollars solely to play one game. Now that PPC support is most likely being phased out, it makes it even harder to find a cheap mac to play on the server, at least one that would work well in raids and such.

Despite that, I can, unfortunately, see your point. I freaking hate hackers with a burning passion that rivals a blue giant, but I'm certainly not naive to their existence in just about everything. I would just hope that anyone even considering trying to do something that stupid on this server would stop and realize the implications of it. Unless they specifically wanted to ruin the one chance we PC players have at playing here, I truly can't see how they could justify doing something that would jeopardize our only affordable option.
