There was rumor that the power pc client is going to cease to work, meaning non intel macs would be unable to continue playing after march 29th. Hobart can you dispel this rumor or clarify whats going to happen? I would greatly appreciate it.

From what I understand when they migrate to launchpad version 4 the login process will change a bit and the PPC patcher will no longer be able to connect... I also anticipate that this will break lewt :P

It may just be a temporary "break" from what Hobart told me. The PPC client will need to be rewritten from scratch, which will be an immense undertaking for him. It also has to work through the new LP4. So, there may be a time where it wont work, and there is still a chance it could go away. Still, an older Intel Mac is about the same as some of the older PPC Macs a few years ago. ;) Also, the support will be much better on the Intel Macs.

I wonder how many people are playing on PowerPCs who would care (that much) if the PPC client went away. One of my two desktops is a G5 and while I would prefer it continue to work, I personally don't think it's worth a massive undertaking on Hobart's part. If he were going to spend that kind of time on our server, there are other things I'd rather see him do. But that's just my opinion...

Jesus H. Christ on a popsicle stick, can't we just flush the PPC client and be done with it already?

If Hobart could only grant us 3 wishes (and has already granted 2 of them with the introduction of the Intel client, and the PoP zone fixes), and somehow "update and maintain a PPC client" takes the third and final slot, we've missed the boat/point on preparing Al'Kabor as a sustainable MMO for years to come.

That said, it'd be nice to have some finality of when/whether things work, so that people can prepare, plan to get new hardware, etc.

-Ill

I would care!

All 3 of my machines are old and rusty and at present, circumstances mean that i could do without the expence of having to find an intel mac in order to keep playing.

Great news about the server however for which i am over teh moon about.

If the Intel client has the ability to flag accounts, couldn't we, as a community set up a process where if a new player creates an account using PPC, someone with an Intel client gets it flagged for them? These forums are active daily and I'm sure it doesn't take all that much time for one person to do this once per new account. It can be like a personal invitation to the server.

I know it sounds like I'm volunteering us to do extra work, but if it saves Hobart from the "immense undertaking of re-writing the PPC client from scratch" and possibly even disabling all the current PPC users, it may be something we can do to help Hobart and SOE. Besides, with new PPC subscriptions dwindling as the Intel client becomes more popular, there wouldn't be that many to flag by us as time goes on.

Speaking for myself, I would hate to lose the ability to play on my two G4's just because new PPC players can't flag their accounts on their own. If I can help in any way to keep PPC clients alive, I would.

It has more to do with how the patchers / clients handle login token handoffs and such. The full rewrite would be required in order for the ppc patcher to handle the updated security lp4 will have.

I like the idea Dunkirk. But I'm not sure how thrilled anyone would be with random folks signing up blank accounts and passing them over. Seems to me that this would be something for one or a few designated volunteers. Guides really if you think about it.

More info direct from Hobart here:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11102

PPC is going away folks. It's outdated and one of the biggest reasons why we got into this situation in the first place. My main system is a tricked out G5 tower and I'd rather be using that to play than the 2010 Intel Mini I'm currently using. Put your older Macs up on Craigslist and look for an older Intel Mac (or save for one of the new Mini's /drool) and you wont be disappointed by the performance. It's truly night and day differance!!

Change. Accept it. Let go of the past. When we're all dumping our Intel processors for ARMs I'll say the same thing.

^ Agreed.

Let's take down my "What Mac to Buy Guide" in the hardware forum I wrote way back when then.

Any intel mac with atleast a core duo (not core solo) should be able to run the Mac game just fine with at least 1gb of ram, 2 gbs recommended.

Been trying (and asking Nikolai) for the past 3 weeks to move it to Archives, but have been unsuccessful. If I can't get it moved by the weekend, I will delete the entire thread. Sorry for all those that contributed to it and did research on the older Macs.
