This scares me because its the machine i will eventually purchase but will only have one graphics card. But I'm with the other guys and think its probably a ram issue. I would try using a couple sticks of ram at a time and see if you can pinpoint bad dimms. (If performance improves you know that theres some bad ram you took out) If that doesnt come up with anything I would try to remove one graphics card and try them one at a time and see if you can eliminate part by part.

Since changing the ram so that the 512 sticks sandwich the 1gig sticks I still have this issue. I've also turned the entire powermac hard drive on privacy for spotlight and that actually seemed to make me more laggy. I ran two separate benchmark programs and both scores were fine. Everything passed the toolbox deluxe diagnostic program that comes on applecare cd as well. Deleted the contents of debug log file and locked it. Still laggy and nearing the end of my rope. Anyone have a miracle for me before I throw this g5 in the nearest lake?

1 gfx card is the standard, Tafas.

My G5 only has one, and EQMac doesnt use the gfx card hardly at all anyways, I'm told.

have you tried running 2 sticks only at a time?

I'll give this a shot tonight, probably leave the 512 sticks out entirely since I was told more than 2 gigs is overkill anyways.

What I meant is that since he has two graphics cards, has he tried using the other one? Couldn't the one he's been using be faulty? I would think its a possibility. Of course 1 card is standard but he said he has two in this g5. And EQMAC sure as hell uses the graphics card, how do you think you the graphics are displayed otherwise?

I've tried them both and they work equally well. Only benchmarked 1 though but both passed the toolbox diagnostic tests.

Is the lagginess specific to EQ, or does the G5 slow down when you do other CPU- and/or graphics-intensive stuff? Watching or streaming videos, playing other games, editing video, etc? Because if it's an EQ-specific thing you can stop worrying about hardware and focus on software.

Can anyone suggest other tasks that are comparably intensive to playing EQ that Murd could try?

Definitely EQ specific.

Well then I'd suggest deleting all your EQ folders and downloading from scratch again from SOE.

ditto what pithy said, aka:

1) start fresh with just the patcher and let it patch everything from scratch
2) then toggle everything off
3) then copy over the dir x2
4) then try 3 boxing

Do I preserve my eqclient.ini and char UI files or just start over completely?

I'd make backups of eqclient.ini, UI_name_52.ini, and name_52.ini (for each character you care about), but at first I'd say go with a 100% fresh install. If it's not laggy with a clean install and all settings turned off, then you can start reintroducing your UI and ini files and turning up settings and so on. When you reload your UI I'd say start with a fresh download of that, too.

Sorry this thing has been such a headache, man.. no fun messing around with this stuff :( But at least all the hardware checks out, and you got it at a good price, so if worse comes to worst you can probably resell it at a profit (and think about how much you're learning about Mac hardware!!!!).

Sorry to tag onto this - but I have a related question and I've learned alot by reading this thread.

On the PC, I believe back in the early 2000s, EQ could not use more than 4GB of RAM - this may just have been because Windows XP could not. If I have the extra RAM, will going above 4GB make any change?

No, not unless you're boxing, or running multiple instances of the EQMac client on the same computer.
