As EQ-style as possible, but I'd prefer commercial ones that won't disappear overnight. I'd prefer not to have to boot camp, if possible.

Oh, and anything SOE had a hand in is off the table, of course.

Any recommendations?

You know I played Guild Wars (just the original). Game was actually pretty fun and had similar classes to EQ and quests etc. The "raiding" aspect is more of a, well, "Guild War". Get a group of people vs. another group of people and you battle (healers, necros, etc.). I know they had one or maybe more expansions since i played, but worth the shot. WoW was too fake for my liking but this game did require some skill in the actual guild wars...

Coincidentally my gf and I went to Gamestop after a movie over the weekend and she conned me into buying a WoW box set through Lich King for 20 bucks. I've tried it before but it never appealed to me. I may have to give it a full 30 day trial in the near future but I know it doesn't measure up to EQ unfortunately.

This is Windows only, so you would need Boot Camp, but I found Final Fantasy XI to be pretty similar to EQ; it has changed some over time but has a lot of similiarities, such as almost-required grouping in most cases, a system similar to AA points at high levels...

It is an older game though (came out in 2002 in Japan, 2003 in the US) and SE has been lagging with new additions to FFXI since Final Fantasy XIV came out (also an MMOG).

There is a 14 day trial on Square-Enix's FFXI website.

Tyrionn, the thing I like about WoW is the PvP. You only have to PvP when you want to, but I really find the battlegrounds fun. It's not something I'd do 24/7, but it can be fun for a few hours at a time.

You pretty much have to get into the 40s to get past all the twinks in the uber twink gear though.

I played some on an dev/player run custom-content that's been running for 8+ years for a while, it was the closest thing to the eqMac experience, in terms of people and gameplay, that I have come across. The game and mechanics are slightly modified (in good ways, IMO), the lore and content are all new, quests actually give useful experience and items, etc. Didn't have the free time to get into raiding though, and with a baby on the way :!: , I doubt I will.

Here's hoping eqMac gets saved, don't give up hope!

Nikolai: no, i didn't. Haven't hung out here much in the last few years.

I tried a WoW emu server and had fun for a few weeks, then the population crashed and I quit. Right now i'm playing an EQ emu server, and it's fun.

As far as swtor, I beta tested it for a short while, didn't like the game too much, but everyone has their own opinion of the game.

If you like WoW PvP you will like PvP in TOR

First and foremost, I'm not trolling.

SW:ToR pvp is seriously broken. I'm not saying I don't like it. I like the idea. The mechanic is seriously broken. If you like WoW pvp, the only thing SW:ToR pvp will make you like, is throwing your keyboard through a window.

In ToR the pve combat is pretty amazing. It actually gives the feel and linearity to combat that actually makes you feel like you are the character in a cinematic. Everything for the most part is smooth. The transition from one target to another is seamless. The combat feels amazing(I know there are certain bugs with ability delay in pvp, but for the most part they are few and far between). I couldn't wait to pvp after playing the pve aspect of the game. I played a Sith Juggernaut and a Sith Marauder on a pvp server(not that it matters...on my treks to level 50, I maybe had 5-6 encounters max with the republic side). I won't be touching on the animation delay issues here, since this is in response to pvp. Even though the animation delay issue is a problem in pvp, it doesn't break pvp like the issue in the next paragraph.

In order to make combat look and feel as smooth as possible the devs added an auto-face "feature" to the game. Basically if you have your back turned to an npc and execute an attack, within range, your character will instantly turn and face the target and execute the ability. This auto face feature is disabled in pvp. I presume because it takes away a huge aspect in pvp, mobility. If I am getting whacked on my another player and run behind him, auto-face would prevent this maneuver from giving me any advantage, as the other players character would instantly turn and face me. This is what makes pvp suck.....and I mean seriously suck. If you are a mouse clicker you may not get this, as your movements are too slow and inconsistent to be relevant.
So, while auto-face makes pvp content look and feel amazing, it totally breaks pvp. "Why Devour?", you might ask. Because the check between your execution of the ability and the server check that you are facing your target takes minimum of 350 ms. That 350 ms(minimum) delay means that if someone is running through me and I execute my attack while facing them, they will have passed through me and be on the other side before the check is finished. What happens next is anyone's guess. Maybe nothing happens. Maybe the animation goes off without the attack happening(blowing the cooldown on the ability). Maybe you just stand there unable to move with no mouse control until the cooldown for the last ability you mashed is done and mouse control is returned. All of my personal friends who started playing ToR prior to release have now quit, as have I. The pvp mechanic is so seriously broken that there is no separation between the elite pvper who only touches their mouse for movement and the casual player who only uses their keyboard for communication. I will say that this broken mechanic has far less of an effect on ranged dps types, because they are 100 meters(this is a generalization) away facing their target. It's just way easier to get out of LoS of a melee than it is someone standing 100 meters away. What I found was that whoever had the most ranged dps in a WZ won said WZ 95+ percent of the time.

In synopsis. SW:ToR pvp is nothing mechanically like WoW pvp. Without using foul and offensive language I can't really convey to you how SW:ToR left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe this will get fixed. I hope it does, because I really liked the pve aspect of the game. I cancelled my sub before it was renewed and only played the first 30 days that was included with the purchase of the game. As an aside, leveling is really fast, fluid and pretty fun. I leveled two characters to level 50 from December 17 till I stopped playing on January 11th. If they fix the horrendous issues with pvp, I will return there and pay them to play. Otherwise, it's not worth the frustration.

I just didnt experience these problems you speak of. I went from PvPing really seriously in WoW to ToR no problem. I would NEVER play a melee class for pvp for what its worth, I think thats wht youre doing wrong.. except for Juggs

Huttball is an innovative warzone, I play with folks on voice chat and we have great success there. Go ahead and join the QQ, cancel preorder crowd but I'm loving it as are most people Ive been playing with. Sure, there are serious problems still with the game but its brand new, what do you expect?

Stereotype me? That's the best you can do? Go fuck yourself! Stereotyping goes both ways.

To everyone else. I did my best to describe a known issue with SW:ToR. The issue described in the above post is well documented and affects EVERYONE, Except Hemp apparently. Most likely Hemp is just a suck nuts pvper and doesn't realize how fucked up it is. See for yourself. I highly recommend that you visit swtor.com/community and read about the bugs there, prior to spending money on the game for the purpose of enjoying pvp. That is all.

So angry! Yeah I got valor rank 60 despite broken pvp and one mechanic ruining the game means I suck. Unlike you (and apparently EVERYONE ELSE!!), I'm enjoying the game and Id enjoy playing it with my friends, sorry I refuted the fundementals of your rant--err--post! Read your own words and see whos got the sh!tty attitude. Take Zark's contribution for example, he didn't like the game and accepts that others do.

So chill out, I'm not joining in your troll lure with all this anger so just drop it and agree to disagree.

edit- given the vitriol associated with your two posts I read back over your original post and while annoying and making it more difficult for melee, I still dont understand why that mechanic is a game breaking problem for you, granted I play a class that benefits from this mechanic. I find that a simple LOS on some ranged classes (specifically Merc/Comm and Sorc/Sage) Certainly you are allowed you opinion and maybe i was too tongue and cheek about the "QQ, cancel preorder" joke, but still... no need to take it so personally.

If Al`Kabor drastically changes, I'd consider going back to Rift since Wine (And CrossOver) works reasonably well with it. I played through the majority of the betas and, despite being a rather heavy WoW clone, it has some redeeming qualities.

That being said, I might hang up my MMO hat for good. Channeling a little bit of Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon.
