If you like WoW PvP you will like PvP in TOR
First and foremost, I'm not trolling.
SW:ToR pvp is seriously broken. I'm not saying I don't like it. I like the idea. The mechanic is seriously broken. If you like WoW pvp, the only thing SW:ToR pvp will make you like, is throwing your keyboard through a window.
In ToR the pve combat is pretty amazing. It actually gives the feel and linearity to combat that actually makes you feel like you are the character in a cinematic. Everything for the most part is smooth. The transition from one target to another is seamless. The combat feels amazing(I know there are certain bugs with ability delay in pvp, but for the most part they are few and far between). I couldn't wait to pvp after playing the pve aspect of the game. I played a Sith Juggernaut and a Sith Marauder on a pvp server(not that it matters...on my treks to level 50, I maybe had 5-6 encounters max with the republic side). I won't be touching on the animation delay issues here, since this is in response to pvp. Even though the animation delay issue is a problem in pvp, it doesn't break pvp like the issue in the next paragraph.
In order to make combat look and feel as smooth as possible the devs added an auto-face "feature" to the game. Basically if you have your back turned to an npc and execute an attack, within range, your character will instantly turn and face the target and execute the ability. This auto face feature is disabled in pvp. I presume because it takes away a huge aspect in pvp, mobility. If I am getting whacked on my another player and run behind him, auto-face would prevent this maneuver from giving me any advantage, as the other players character would instantly turn and face me. This is what makes pvp suck.....and I mean seriously suck. If you are a mouse clicker you may not get this, as your movements are too slow and inconsistent to be relevant.
So, while auto-face makes pvp content look and feel amazing, it totally breaks pvp. "Why Devour?", you might ask. Because the check between your execution of the ability and the server check that you are facing your target takes minimum of 350 ms. That 350 ms(minimum) delay means that if someone is running through me and I execute my attack while facing them, they will have passed through me and be on the other side before the check is finished. What happens next is anyone's guess. Maybe nothing happens. Maybe the animation goes off without the attack happening(blowing the cooldown on the ability). Maybe you just stand there unable to move with no mouse control until the cooldown for the last ability you mashed is done and mouse control is returned. All of my personal friends who started playing ToR prior to release have now quit, as have I. The pvp mechanic is so seriously broken that there is no separation between the elite pvper who only touches their mouse for movement and the casual player who only uses their keyboard for communication. I will say that this broken mechanic has far less of an effect on ranged dps types, because they are 100 meters(this is a generalization) away facing their target. It's just way easier to get out of LoS of a melee than it is someone standing 100 meters away. What I found was that whoever had the most ranged dps in a WZ won said WZ 95+ percent of the time.
In synopsis. SW:ToR pvp is nothing mechanically like WoW pvp. Without using foul and offensive language I can't really convey to you how SW:ToR left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe this will get fixed. I hope it does, because I really liked the pve aspect of the game. I cancelled my sub before it was renewed and only played the first 30 days that was included with the purchase of the game. As an aside, leveling is really fast, fluid and pretty fun. I leveled two characters to level 50 from December 17 till I stopped playing on January 11th. If they fix the horrendous issues with pvp, I will return there and pay them to play. Otherwise, it's not worth the frustration.
