To those thinking about getting OS X Lion, they are removing the ability to run PowerPC Applications. Meaning, if you want the latest and greatest OS from Apple, you won't be able to run EQ.

Quote:
TRIM support for super-fast SSD writing
Recovery partition to your startup hard drive removing the need for the OS X installer disc in case something goes wrong
Possible Dropbox-like functionality for MobileMe storage
Find my Mac functionality in Apple’s MobileMe service
Removed support for PowerPC applications
Removed Front Row (possible it’s only in the seeded development OS, however)
Podcast Producer, a true podcast production tool letting you create various shows, episodes, and effortless edit, upload, and share your podcasts
Yahoo IM! support in iChat including video and audio conferencing, iOS-style symbol keys (hold down a key on your keyboard and an onscreen symbol list appears like in iOS), and live URL previews when you hover over a URL link

This is a stupid PC user asking this question.

Is it possible for Boot Camp to run earlier versions of OS X?

Not entirely sure as I haven't tried it myself. I was under the impression Boot Camp is exclusively for Windows. You can, however, install a completely new OS to an external HD and boot in Target Disk Mode.

In System Preferences, there's a widget called Startup Disk, essentially allows you to control which volume to boot from. Note that it has to be a volume, not a folder like in the earlier OS9 days, so if you want everything on one disk you will have to partition.

I don't have Lion yet so I don't have a clue yet, but it's possible there will be a way to copy over the Rosetta stuff from Snow Leopard. In any case, more impetus for someone to get an x86 client build going :)

A x86 client perhaps would be the end of EQ Mac as we know it. They probably just would give us the PC code before start over from scratch.

The better plan is to make the client into a Universal Binary app. There will be a lot of tweaking to get it there, but it might be easier than starting from scratch.

An x86 client would boost our sub base, but open us up to more of the crap that the PC side has to deal with, in addition to more of the hackers/thieves as we saw a couple years ago.

This will be something that I'll be bouncing off my SOE contacts over the next couple of weeks to discuss the best course of action. Once I get the ball rolling and have some feedback to share, I'll create a separate thread to keep people up to date on any possible discussions.

This is what I meant when I said x86 client, not a Windows client.

am i wrong to want to link threads from years past with the same worry? :) i'd be very surprised if there's no work around whatsoever...

if rosetta really does go beyond 'not quite dead' i hope there is a community work around... cause i doubt that i'd stick with an old os long term.

Just posting to say that I just installed the official Lion, and the EQ icon has an "no go" circle over it and if you try to launch it, it simply states that Rosetta apps are no longer supported by the OS. Anyone that does upgrade to Lion is going to need a workaround.

Have you tried installing Rosetta from a previous OS disk?

Just did that, actually. Installs fine. Doesn't appear to actually do anything, though. Rosetta apps still have the "no" sign across them. Not sure if it's just a plist or kext mod at this point, or if it's simply a no-go.
