Figured at least some of my fellow players must do consultancy-style work. I'm looking for an application for OS X that times how long I spend on various stags of a project.

Ideally, it's to be able to track multiple tasks at once (rather than require I finished one before I start the next) - so I should be able to incrementally pause/unpause various tasks as different clients bug me ;)

Any suggestions for a good one? They're are a few on the App store - real cheap, and a few advertise in MacUser, real expensive.

I'd appreciate any info on what you've used and your mileage with it

Cadsuane, I think he wants something that actually acts like a stop watch. He goes to work, hits a button that says, "I've started on this project." It tracks the time until he says "Done", then stores the data for later billing. So a spreadsheet might be half of it, but only half.

Aah, got it. I only have to juggle 1-8 project charges at a time, so a sheet work for me.
I actually wrote a time/billing tracker/logger years ago for windows, but that obviously wouldn't help here.

Try toggl.com. It's free and not super-advanced, but has all the basics you could need. And being a website, you can access it from anywhere, not just on your home computer.

Do a search on Macupdate. Surely you'll find something.

Look into Daylite for project management and Billings for Billing. They kind of work together. Daylite is highly customizable (almost too much so).

Thanks for the responses folk.

Yeah - I need quite precise timing as a couple of my clients charge out my time again to a host of their clients. So, in any one week, I've probably recorded work for 30-50 end clients and some of it may only be 10 minutes or so. The software I currently have (TaskTime) is kludgy, and insists that I 'finish' one task before starting the next.

This sucks because if I'm halfway through one item, then I have to take a 20 minute phone call on another task, I have to END the first task, start a new task, then create a third task to record the remaining time on the first task. And it has no normalising or aggregate feature to fix that.

I could write one myself, but I have like enough to do already =)

I'll try Freshbooks as one of my major clients uses that anyway. I'll let you know how I get on.

Citrix's Shop Floor does exactly what you are looking for, but that's a commercial product that runs as a thin client on the Mac so I don't think it would help you.
