Hello,

I was thinking, after something Brad said, that we should all make posts on the popular Mac gaming sites. I am concerned that not enough people even KNOW about EQ Mac. Sony did not really do a big advertising campaign or anything. I am worried that without enough players, we won't get expansions, updates, etc after a few months.

Some good sites to spread the word would be sites like:

http://www.insidemacgames.com/

http://www.macgamer.com/index.php

Does this idea seem cheesy? What do you all think?

I don't think SOE has any faith in the MAC version and that is why they place it at the bottom of the EverQuest page next to the ring tones and pocket PC games. But they did do magazine advertisements. I have seen one in all of the mac magazines the past couple of months and they are 2 pages too.

If SOE had no faith in the Mac version they wouldn't be throwing money at it.
These aren't amateurs who decided out of kindness to make a Mac version. They are in it for the business, and that decision was made after carefully studying the market and the potential for it to turn a profit.
The Al'Kabor server population is growing, bit by bit, and it will eventually reach it's limit. It will take time, which is just as well.

I agree that they do care. I just see the bottom of the page as products that they don't expect to make much money off of. I think it should be right up next to the EQ PC link.

so.....

If you all want more people to play, are you going to post on those sites? Or are we just saying "yeah, not many people playing, you're right" but then not doing anything about it?

I forgot what site, but I actually posted about this site, and about the slogan contest that would give away a free copy of eqmac, and I don't think anyone bothered.

The two things that will really help EQMac:

1) Brad posted way back during beta that MacGamer was working on an article for EQMac. Once that goes up, it will make people more aware of what the game is about.

2) The free EQ with .MAC renewals. (Unless you want another freaking copy of the Sims)

Also important: If you see someone in game that doesn't know what they're doing, don't call them a "n00b" or anything. Help them out, and they'll have a good time the first few weeks and tell their friends to pick up the game. Thats pretty much how EQPC grew.

I posted on one of the sites and when I see a lvl 1-5 in the zone, I always ask if they are new and if they have any questions to let me know.

Being as I will be a new player later today, I appreciate knowing that there is friendly Mac users out there already.

One of the things I hated most about EQ on PC was the total rudeness to "newbie" characters and complete lack of grouping with those players.

I'm actually thrilled that there is a Mac only server for us to play on, given that Mac gamers are as a general rule much friendly.

Cheers!

If you have any questions just look me up. I will more than likely be playing Zukak, a Iksar BL.

The rudeness of the PC side is understandable. There are far to many Newbs taking advantage of people. I had one guy come up to me and said that he fell into the Hole and lost all of his stuff (he was a lvl 4 Erud Necromancer). He asked if I could spare some plat and I said sure, giving him 10 plat. Now 10 plat is a lot for a lvl 4. I zone out and come back about 5 min later and he tells me this story again, not remembering that he already told me. I was so upset that I gave the money to a scammer. So, I think you can guess how I felt towards people who appeared to be new. This platform will get like that in a year or so.

I have to admit that I have had MANY a person try to pull a scam or try to get something out of me for nothing. I usually handle this with role-playing. I act as though the situation is serious and get them to make a commitment to paying me back. Even going so far as to set them as a friend and /tell them about my stuff/money. Being a DE Shadowknight I get to have that "mafia/loan shark" character attitude. I bother them and annoy them even asking them if they know what PvP is. (I like it when they say no.)

On the other hand, I have also met GREAT and helpful people! People who have loaned me stuff and supported me unasked during fights that I couldn't handle.

I'm also as a rather new player. I was in Beta and now I am on almost eveynight. I always try to help people when they have questions and try to help out with any adventuring they need. Again, I always start with Role-playing and after some time of chating I slowly transition into more modern conversation. :D

I forgot to mention in my prior post that it happened before they put in the re-spawn with your gear till lvl 10 patch. I also fell in the Hole and lost my stuff as well so I could relate to the guy that I helped in the previous post.

I'm all in favor of spreading the word. My personal opinion is that SOE certainly wants Mac EQ to succeed (which seems obvious). However, I don't know if they fully understand the Mac market and how to cater or market to it. From that perspective, you don't see as many subtle PR stunts such as those that Aspyr, MacPlay and MacSoft like to do (IMG features and the like) or advertising on large Mac sites like Version Tracker. I'm no genius of Mac game marketing myself, so I don't know what all typically goes on behind the scenes.

Anyway, a word-of-mouth campaign certainly wouldn't hurt. If Mac EQ hits that magic number that determines that the Mac MMORPG market is financially sustainable (a number I don't know :) ) then we have the potential for a lot of good things to start happening. both with MacEQ and other things.

Is there someone to talk to about this kind of stuff with? Email the one that is heading up the advertising? I remember in an article that the president of SOE or someone like that was playing on his Powerbook, got any clue to what his name is in game? I'm sure enough emails to the right person could get things going better.
