Played EQ from Classic to PoP and then quit. Followed the expansions at an arm's length until I got sucked into WoW for a while, then quit that, got married, and had a kid. Nostalgia hits me now and then about how the game was before I heard everything changed for the worse. Looking to maybe make a few US Central time friends to group with. Trying to gauge how active the server is, hope it's still populous enough to survive in!

I played a cleric all the way to 65 back in the day but after being spoiled by "easy MMORPGs" (and getting older and having less time to LFG due to RL things), I'm looking for some advice as to what the best class to roll on this server. I remember necros were pretty self-sufficient, but I'm up for suggestions?

I look forward to taking a jaunt back through Norrath, it's like an old friend. :)

EDIT: Spelling

Glad you've decided to join us!!

Most people on the server are max level, so sometimes finding a group at lower levels can be difficult, but they do still happen! Once you can get to plane of valor it's *usually* pretty easy to find or form an exp group.

As far as what class you play, my personal suggestion is to play the class you think you would most enjoy, pure and simple. If you want to solo - Necros and Mages are your best bets. Druids and Wizards can quad kite. Shamans are also decent soloers.

I hope you find a home here!

If you enjoyed playing a Cleric before, then why not do it again?

Sure, it will be tougher to level than other classes. Lower level groups can't be found unless you are active in searching for them.

However, plenty of people have done it, and you will be welcomed with open arms once you hit 65.

But, again, it's a low population server. That's not to say you won't see people, but the server needs more people of all classes. I'd say the 2 most populated classes are Enchanter and Druid, but that's just what I see.

In fairness, bard soloing doesn't really kick in until you get your first charm. Before that, it's kiting with 1-2 songs or knocking the crap out of easy mobs. Dreadfully boring. Late game bard soloing is incredibly fun, though.

I played a cleric to 50 in EQ Classic and then gave my account away. I did my 2nd cleric when SoV expansion came out and quit at 65 around Planes of Power time. You could say that alone is reason to not roll a cleric again LOL. Plus, soloing as a cleric is an exercise in patience that I just don't think I could do. (I still remember having to resort to pathing bugs in Crystal Caverns and TOFS on some lonely evenings to level.) I'd rather play a somewhat independent class this go around. :)

I began last night as a human druid (only because I remember Qeynos so well) only to remember how terrible human blindness at night in Surefall Glade is. It took me 10 minutes to stumble through the exit tunnel with my crappy candle. Since it was mentioned that Druids and Chanters are pretty saturated, I may try a few classes out before settling. Had a fun romp through Qeynos Hills and the front yard though last night :)

lies. between dual weild, single pulling with lull song, self-haste song, single target slow/snare song, heal song, and damage shield song, soloing is doable at level 22. level 20 if you take DS out of the picture, level 6 if you take slow out of the picture. i melee solo'ed on both of my bards until level 45ish.

and mezz/heal makes even cons and yellow cons doable.

I've just started up on Al'Kabor, 3 boxing sk,shm and mage. Currently around level 12-13 so if you see any of Vanaar, Karella or Lokka on send a tell.

The crew here on Al'Kabor are bloody fantastic and many of them go out of their way to help newbies.

Exactly. It's like melee/mezzing Gantru Dralkenr over and over again until you get charm. /yawn

EW walruses and Ulthorks, now that was fun charming in the late 20s and 30s (Especially with pulse based charm). Think I only ever swung a weapon after that in groups.

Can't a bard conceivably pbae circle kite at lvl 5? You would have to be skilled in twisting and range no doubt - but I'm fairly sure it can be done.

If I had it to do all over again, I might have played a Wizard - just because my VERY first toon was a wizard until I learned about how a cleric can rezz for plat and I was tired of trying to sell crushbone belts!

Many of us box two or more toons at once - its something to consider and there are PLENTY of threads if you search the forums about what works. I can sum it up for you in two statements:

1: Boxing anything with a cleric, druid or shaman will work just fine.
2: Play whatever toon will keep you logging back in to play.

Outside of that, the normal situation applies that groups at low levels are hard to come (but they DO happen as many of us have multiple alts) by with a server population that is max level: play a self-efficient class, start the game with a few reliable friends, or box to make yourself self-efficient.

i wouldn't say its not possible, but the execution will be more difficult than the theory.... lots of fizzled notes at low level, and that level 1 PBAE damage song has a tiny radius.

And Del, i'm not saying you're wrong, I just never liked that 18-second level 25ish charm that needs the refresh.... and i've always liked melee more than kiting =)

I found that autocircle was just not large enough to avoid being hit by mobs here. I also had a lot of problems with mobs warping right on top of me and hitting me anyway when I was within ae range. I ae kited to 53 and stopped. I still got a lot of levels off of spirocs in TD though, the fun thing here is that their fort doesn't really exist and you can pretty much pull and aggro any of them from the ground.
